Tonight, i learned that a friend and a former work colleague of mine called Gavin Fern has been missing since Saturday and there has been no contact from him since that afternoon. This is completely uncharacteristic of Gav being that i worked closely with him on nightshift at a job i used to work at a 24 hour taxi booking service call centre years ago. He is a really easy-going, pleasant and brilliantly humourous person and it’s completely shocked and stunned me to learn that the guy i used to have sneaky cigarette breaks with every half hour and whom i discussed music and films with during the wee small hours as well as played pranks and jokes on about the dubious shiny salmon pink shirts he wore to work is missing.
I normally write blogs which are caustic and barbed in my criticisms of modern culture but i felt i had to write this particular blog tonight because naturally, i’m worried about the bloke i used to work with and had so many laughs with. The last time i seen him was when i was in Edinburgh for a work conference and i met up on two nights to drink with him and reminisce about the shit we used to get up to on nightshift, even now i can envisage him convulsing in hilarity at some of the more sarcastic observations i used to make about the job and the people who used to call us to book taxis during the night.
The worst part of all this is that the bloke i know is missing and all of us who know him are trying to contact him but to no avail, you just never prepare yourself in case such a thing would ever happen to someone you know.
When i first saw the @HelpFindGavin Twitter feed tonight and clicked on the links, i immediately burst into tears because i know the guy these links were referring to, and even now, it’s still not sunk in that it’s Gavin they’re talking about, other friends of mine who worked alongside him like @the_effigy and @TheStripeyOne are as equally shocked as i am because it’s so out of character for Gavin.
If you’re reading this blog then all i want to say is please RT all the links to help us bring Gavin home safe and sound, and i can’t emphasise enough how great the people of Twitter have been tonight in spreading the word about the appeal to help find him.
I just know that if Gav ever reads this blog, he will probably read the bit about me crying and rip the piss out of me for being such an emotional twat, and i am hoping he comes back and rips the piss out of me because at least then, i will know he is okay.
